The organ (pipe or electronic) is a fascinating instrument with a rich history. The organ has been the pre-eminent instrument leading worship in churches for hundreds of years and there is a need for organists in many denominations, particularly for part-time employment.
My approach to organ instruction is as a companion on a journey. It is intended to be practical and educational. Emphasis is on a relaxed approach to playing the organ based on the Alexander Technique, using music that is functional and useful for the average church organist or person desiring to learn more about the instrument.
Lessons can be either in a home studio or a church environment. Over time, the student will learn about basic organ design and registration, repertoire, hymn playing and choral accompaniment.
I am a graduate of Westminster Choir College of Rider University, which has one of the leading departments for organ and choral music in the country. At Westminster I studied with noted recitalists William Whitehead and Robert Carwithen, and my studies continue with such prominent persons in the field as Phillip Steinhaus, Boston Conservatory: Harry MacMurray, Loyola University, New Orleans and Roger Nyquist, Santa Clara University.
I have has coached with Roberta Gary of Cinncinati Conservatory in Alexander Technique, a healing art that applies its principles of body movement to the art of organ playing for a more relaxed and musical approach to the instrument.
